Pond Filtration, Pond Maintenance and Aquarium Maintenance, UK

Our service covers all aspects of pond work, including planting schemes and advice. We have our preferred species which we continue to use time and again.  These are tried and tested and are either ornamental, good at water purification, good at ground cover, provide shelter for pond creatures, encourage insects or cover the surface of the water to keep down the algae.

This is one of our favourites. Marsh marigold or Kingcup is a plant that covers many of the fields covered above. It has large light green leaves and lots of yellow flowers which appear from April to June. It provides good water purification for its growth. It is great cover for both aquatic and terrestrial animals. If allowed to grow to full size, it can cover the surface for upto a foot around its pot.

Water Hawthorne is a deep water aquatic plant. It has surface floating leaves and floating flowers. It grows well in all sizes of ponds and has the most beautiful flowers whan it blooms which apear late and early in the growing season  and some times over mild winters. The blooms smell of vanilla and can be quite over-powering when there is a few of them together. Loves cold flowing water.

The Arum Lilly, though not a true aquatic plant thrives in a pond if kept in very shallow water. Its dark green spade shaped leaves provide an attractive display, add to that the cup shaped flowers which appear between March and May making an excellent counter- point in pure white.

Monkey Musk is a very odd name for such a pretty and useful plant. It produces a great display of yellow flowers June to August sometimes earlier. Monkey Musk grows vigorously removing plenty of nutrients from the water as it does so. It also provides cover for aquatic and terrestrial animals whilst it covers ground and water. Needs keeping under control but every time you prune it, it removes nutrient from the water which is great.

The Chameleon plant has great colours, the one more common in the trade is the variegated species which is either a goldy yellow and red or green.

Its leaves give off a scent of orange peel when brushed against and it has lovely small white flowers in the spring. This plant grows well even in the drier areas of the garden and also grows out into open water. Like the Monkey
Musk the more you prune it the more nutrient is removed.

Acorus grass has many colour variety, the nicest is this cream and green striped grass that is also available in a yellow and green and a plain green.

Acorus grows outward from the pit like a mushroom ring and if left too long will have a bald patch in the middle.  With regular maintenance this plant will look great providing shelter for both water and land critters. As it doesn't take over, this plant is also great for covering pipes and other unsightly bits and pieces.

For larger ponds you cant beat the Reedmace which is mistakenly called the Bullrush.  It is a short spiky grass not attractive and very invasive.

The reedmace is excellent at removing waterbourne nutrients from the pond. many animals find shelter among the stems and you can also use the seed heads, dried, in flower arranging.

Lillies of various species are great for a pond.

The species depend on the size of pond and preferred colour. Colours come in whites, pinks, reds, copper and yellow. Different species like different depths of pond and produce varying amounts of leaves and blooms. Lillies are great at covering the surface of the pond to prevent algae and the cover provided makes your fish feel more secure.

Creeping Jenny, mainly known as a garden plant grows well in boggy areas and in the shallow part of the pond. It's great at covering rockerys and will make them look more natural. It's also nice grown round the base of higher growing plants to give the base a bit of colour.

This prolific plant has lots of green leaves and yellow flowers in late sping and early summer. Like the marsh marigold it is good in partial shade.

Hornwort is an oxegenating plant and unlike other oxegenators is free floating.

It is the hardiest of oxegenators and survives where others will not, even sometimes in ponds with hungry koi. Like most oxegenators it grows well and is good for the water, providing cover for fish and other pond life.

Classed as a oxegenotor The Parrots Feather plant tends to grow above the water with lovely fine green fronds.

These grow well and are not only great for wildlife and fish but cover unsightly areas of the pond like liner or pipes with a great lush green growth. This is another fast grower it does need work but again the more it needs pruning the more nutrient is being removed.

Like the Monkey Musk, the Yellow Skunk cabbage is another unfortunately named plant. Named for it's bad smell upon blooming to attract flies, this is unsubstantiated really, and gives this lovely plant a bad name.

Growing to about two feet tall it has light green oval leaves with freckles. The flowers which appear in the spring can be quite large growing almost to the size of the leaves themselves which as previously stated can grow to about two feet.

A fully grown Yellow skunk cabbage is quite an impressive plant and makes a great specimen plant for the pond or bog garden.
